What is your definition of activism?

Activism is standing up for something that, deep inside, you know is aworthy cause. It is fighting for something to come about which is absent. It is also opposing something that you feel must be stopped. True activism, in my opinion, is standing on the front lines willing to take whatever comes in order to get your point across, and not giving up until your goals are achieved. The root of the word "activism" is "active," for that is what you have to be in order to see your ideals through. Above all, there must be action.

How does the clearcutting of the redwood forest affect Texans?

Simple: It doesn't effect the country, the nation of America. It effects the planet. These redwoods are thousands of years old. Majestic, silent and strong, these trees have withstood regimes and man-made ideals. For the US, it is simply another loss of national identity. Yet for the earth, it is a loss of immeasurable spirit. The redwoods of California stand as sentinels for the passing of time and generations. With their absence we lose a witness to the ever changing wonders of life.

~Wade Williams

Besides the obvious fact that clear cutting an old growth forest destroys the very eco-system which nurtures essential life form for all mankind, it is a harsh reminder of what money and greed can do to our society. Our values are misplaced and we hand over the power to people who have only their bottom line of profit to justify as to why they should take the trees. Our timber industries should practice sustainable yield forestry to insure the proper growth and maintenance of the forest to be used for the industry. Clear cutting is a direct transgression against proper forest management practices.
